About this site

This is my personal site that I offer to present and future modern Buddhist students and practitioners, as a teacher and scholar of Early Buddhism.

Who am I? — Born a boomer in San Francisco, I am an an academic in the cognitive sciences turned Buddhist monk in the Burmese Theravada tradition, as well as John Dinsmore turned Bhikkhu Cintita.

Early Buddhist for modern Buddhists — My research, practice, and teaching are firmly based in the earliest teachings of Buddhism—very close to what the Buddha taught prior to the arising of distinct Buddhist traditions. Having myself navigated the treacherous waters that separate an ancient Buddhist worldview from a modern worldview, I think of myself as a bridge (or at least a ferry) for the modern student.

What this site offers — This site is at once (1) a library, (2) a classroom, and (3) an art gallery.

  • As a library (or a bookstore), this site provides access to my writings, audios and videos, which are all available for free download, as well as to other recommended readings. My books can be ordered, for those who like to flip physical pages. Select “Resources” in the menu bar.
  • As a classroom, this site offers a program of study and practice, relying heavily on its library resources. Upcoming talks, classes, seminars, and retreats are offered on-site or through Zoom. It also offers an opportunity for personal guidance. Select “Study&Practice” in the menu bar.
  • As an art gallery, this site offers on each page a Buddha image from the “Austin Collection,” a unique set of modern replicas of ancient statuary from different times and places in Asia. Select “Art credits” in the footer below for more information.
